Leadership is a difficult skill. There is no perfect leader, and there are always to improve.
Through my experiences as a business owner, I’ve implemented some strategies to improve my leadership style. I hope you enjoy them!
Don’t leave them hanging. Communicate!
Whenever I talk with someone who works in a W-2 role, I ask questions about their work environment and boss.
I often ask “How do you like your boss?” and “What could your boss could improve upon?”
I get the same answer Every. Single. Time.
Communication.
Bosses often fail to communicate effectively with employees.
This causes an inefficient and stressful working environment.
Don’t leave your employees hanging!
Assign goals, not tasks
This leadership style is called Transformational Leadership.
Instead of engaging in the repetitive process of assigning tasks, empower your employees by assigning goals and coaching them along the way.
Show gratitude
This is a big one. I conducted a Twitter poll about this.
How much do you value receiving appreciation / gratitude from your boss?
(Scale from 1-3, 3 being highly valued)

As you can see, it’s incredibly important for employees to feel valued in their job.
You can show gratitude by:
Noticing the little wins
Thanking them for their work
Praising them in public
Praise in public, coach in private
The old cliche reads like this. “Praise in public, criticize in private.”
I change “criticize” to “coach”.
I never like to criticize employees, so I never do it.
Instead, I explain how they could have approached a situation better and explain why their decision was suboptimal.
Coaching will build a much healthier relationship and culture than criticism.
