Learn to launch and scale your vending machine business to $85,000/mo from Ethan Kohan. Secrets shared every Saturday morning for free.

I’ve hired 15+ employees from outside the United States for my remote company, Greenbox Storage.

I’ve learned a lot about how to hire and manage.

Here are three of my favorite tactics.

1. Add friction to the interview process

If you’re not using a recruiting agency, you’re likely creating your own job postings on platforms like Indeed.

(By the way, I think recruiting agencies are a waste of money. I hire all my employees through Indeed for free.)

Soon after you post your job, you’ll soon realize that you’ve got problems.

You become flooded with applicants. I’ve received hundreds of applicants for one position.

It’s like trying to drink water out of Niagara Falls. You’re not really sure where to start.

Here’s a great solution:

Require a 60-second voice recording on each application.

This accomplishes two things:

  1. Identifies the people who are serious about their application.

  2. Provides you a sample of their English speaking ability.

Other people like to require a video recording, but I’ve found that a voice recording is sufficient for the first step of the application process.

2. How to pay your offshore hires

One of the great things about hiring outside the United States is the circumvention of payroll tax.

(In my opinion, payroll tax is the most ridiculous tax in existence. I strongly believe companies should not be penalized for providing jobs.)

I use to Veem.com pay my offshore talent. You link your business bank account and can start paying people all over the world.

3. Build culture through weekly All Hands Meetings

I implemented this tactic in late 2023 and I’m a big fan.

It can be difficult for employees to build relationships in a remote environment, with people all over the world.

Once per week, we take a half hour and do team building exercises.

Examples:

  1. One week, each employee was tasked with creating slides introducing their family.

  2. Another week, each employee created slides about their vacation destination.

  3. Another week, each employee created slides about their favorite hobby.

I realize this may not be possible for larger companies, but some form of this is certainly possible.

And that’s all for this week! Enjoy your day!
